VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Two projects:

Lantern Ski 2021

A few folks have stepped up to assist.  Still looking for TWO more individuals wanted to assist with the Lantern Servicing at the bunker.

Sunday, November 14 at 1pm.

It will be about a 3 hour time commitment.  If interested to help out please  e-mail Kerry Miller  at millerk@millerinc.ca>.

Penti’s Shelter

Penti’s shelter at the South Hub was damaged in June at the same time that Cec’s Cabin was vandalized. Thanks to a crew of volunteers and some Shuswap Trail Alliance employees Cec’s was restored.

The Larch Hills Nordic Society is looking for a few volunteers to clean up the broken glass at Penti’s and replace with some new glass or plexiglass.  All materials needed for these repairs will be paid for by the club.

If you are interested in helping with this please contact us at manager@skilarchhills.ca.

Thank you for considering lending a hand on these projects!

DAVE BRUBAKER

submitted by M Beckner

There will be a vitally important presence missing on the hill this fall/winter. After 26 years volunteering as heavy duty mechanic and welder, Dave Brubaker is retiring. Although we seldom saw him on the hill, he was definitely there – under the PB tracksetter in the tracksetter shed fixing a broken line of some sort or other, or out on the trail helping a tracksetter with a mechanical problem which Dave would ultimately be able to fix.  As skiers, we felt the impact of Dave’s dedication as we skied on wonderfully trackset trails, or stopping at Cec’s Cabin we started a fire in the stove for which Dave built the safety fence – thankful for the wood which frequently comes up by skidoo – skidoos which Dave kept going with his mechanical know how. Dave has the lasting legacy of the eight Dave Brubaker Gates which continue to protect the fragile parts of the Larch Hills.

All the best to Dave in his retirement. Dave intends to do alot of skiing this winter. Quoting Dave:  I skied only once last year.  My hands were too greasy as I left the tracksetter shed, so I turned left and went home.  Thanks, Dave!  See you on the trails!

Carbon Neutral

The LHNS executive and membership is committed to reducing our Greenhouse Gas [GHG] footprint.  Our goal is to bring our carbon footprint to net zero <https://netzeroclimate.org/what-is-net-zero/>.  That means reducing our fossil fuel consumption for operations, tracksetting, trail work, etc. to as low as possible and purchasing offsets for the CO2 emitted from the remaining fuel we did use.

However, the greatest GHG footprint is skier transportation to the hill. You can help minimize those emissions in 3 ways:

Consider reducing the frequency of your trips to the Larch Hills (ski less often but longer).

Car pool (fill your vehicle with friends!) as much as possible.  Bus transportation is also being investigated.

Contribute to our voluntary Carbon Offset Fund (at membership renewal on Zone 4) to neutralize your commuting emissions.

Buying offsetting carbon credits for internal combustion engine powered track-setting and skier transportation helps XC skiing become more climate friendly by bringing our net footprint to zero.  As more vehicles become electric and hydrogen-cell powered, the need to purchase carbon credits will diminish.
