2021 11 17: Carbon Neutral Committee, Lantern Ski, Master Program, Officials Course

Help make Larch Hills XC skiing climate friendly!

Submitted by Jim Beckner

The LHNS executive and membership is committed to reducing our Greenhouse Gas [GHG] footprint.  Our goal is to bring our carbon footprint to net zero <https://netzeroclimate.org/what-is-net-zero/>.    That means reducing our fossil fuel consumption for operations, tracksetting, trail work, etc. to as low as possible and purchasing offsets for the CO2 emitted from the remaining fuel we did use.

However, the greatest GHG footprint is skier transportation to the hill. You can help minimize those emissions in 3 ways:

  1. Consider reducing the frequency of your trips to the Larch Hills (ski less often but longer).
  2. Car pool (fill your vehicle with friends!) as much as possible.  Bus transportation is also being investigated.
  3.  Contribute to our voluntary Carbon Offset Fund (at membership renewal on Zone 4) to neutralize your commuting emissions.

Buying offsetting carbon credits for internal combustion engine powered track-setting and skier transportation helps XC skiing become more climate friendly by bringing our net footprint to zero.  As more vehicles become electric and hydrogen-cell powered, the need to purchase carbon credits will diminish.

Larch Hills Nordic Society classic
LANTERN SKI is back!

We are excited to announce the LHNS classic Lantern Ski is back.  Mark your calendars for December 29th. Volunteer, ski or snowshoe this magical route (Choose from 1KM, 5KM or 6KM) across bogs and track-set trails lit by the gentle glow of kerosene lanterns.

Some notable changes for 2021. As a flow-through event under the Provincial Health Orders, we are unable to share treats and beverages in the Chalet. Please bring your own to enjoy while out on the trail. The Chalet will be available for emergency access only.

The Salmon Arm Food Banks can always use our help. Entry to the event will be by donation.

If you are a LHNS member and would like to volunteer for this event, please email Kerry Miller: millerk@millerinc.ca
