2022 January Snow Depth
This graph is derived from a Larch Hills Snow Depths Measurements table, 2007 – 2022 posted on the Club’s website here: https://skilarchhills.ca/snow-depth-measurements/ Nine years of snow depth measurements, 2012 – 2022 are represented. No early February measurements were taken in 2014 or 2015. Planned early March 2022 Larch Hills snow depth measurements will allow 16 years of snow depth measurements (2007 – 2022) to be represented for the period early January to early March.
Are you interested in a snow depths measurements ski to the 1400m elevation Larch Hills Summit and other measurement locations in early March 2022? See Contact names / phone numbers at the bottom of the linked webpage above. It’s usually a 4 to 5 hour round trip ski depending on weather and snow conditions with some great views along the way!
‘Whoopee North’s Sharp Corner gets a pine rail fence’
A section of what was barbed wired fence on the track set sharp corner of Whoopee North was changed to a pine rail fence with barbed wire remaining behind the pine rails. The job was done last June by Cattle Grazing Permit Holder, Jeff Fried and sons, owners of Farmstrong Cidery near Armstrong. LHN Trail Planning Committee reps met with Harold Hetherington, the FLNRO Range Officer and Jeff Fried and sons in early June on site to discuss the need for this skiers’ safety improvement. Prior to this improvement, warning signs had been posted before the sharp corner.
Larch Lake Bogs Route Ski Tour News
2022 Feb 2
Skiers have been enjoying the off-track set routes connecting four bogs in the Cec’s Cabin – Larch Lake basin, Larch Lake Loop, upper Larch Hills Road area for the past 2 to 3 weeks. Access points to each route section are posted along track set Larch Hills Road and Larch Lake Loop and non-track set Log Roller with large coroplast “You Are Here†map signs. Orange blazes and hung ribbons along the routes are most easily seen by skiing in a clockwise, west to east direction from a trailhead posted “You Are Here†map sign ~400 meters west of Cec’s Cabin. Some light pruning has been done. These are “stealthy’ ski touring routes. Route marking from each trail head is inconspicuous at the entry point to avoid summer damage to the bogs. “You Are Here†signs are posted for the deep snow ski season only. The Larch Lake Bogs Route, connecting 400M bog, 200M bog, 150M bog and 100M bog, opened†with a Thursday Geezers ski tour on January 4, 2007. The route has been maintained since 2007 by LHN volunteers. See the Larch Lake Bogs Ski Route Map listed here.
