This week we would like to highlight our amazing completely volunteer run track setting crew. Some new to the club may not realize the incredible amount of hours that are spent making sure that our trails are kept well-groomed. Special mention should be made to George Jackson who leads the Tracksetters and spends countless hours volunteering for Larch HIlls in this role. Also, we have Jim Nadler and Wayne Buchanan who are the leaders of the Extra Gang that does early season grooming with snowmobiles and the Kubota, in addition to maintenance throughout the season. For years the track setting crew has had Dave Brubaker working as head of maintenance for our machines. Thanks to these individuals for carrying on these important tasks. Family Snowshoe Day
Salmon Arm Parks and Recreation are promoting the Family Snowshoe Day for Sunday, January 24th.
We are looking for volunteers to host from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. Welcome families to the hill, offer them a snowshoe map and ensure that they sign in at the kiosk. If we have enough folks interested it could be a short 1 hour shift each.
In partnership between Nordiq Canada and Biathlon Canada, we challenge you to track distances skied in order to become Canada’s distance skiing champion. This challenge is open to all members of Nordiq Canada and Biathlon Canada and will begin Monday, January 11 and run for 7 weeks until Sunday, February 28, 2021. Participants will be able to register at Zone4.ca starting Saturday January 9, 2021 with the challenge going live Monday, January 11. All participants are eligible for weekly draw prizes and total kilometers skied leaders will be awarded prizing after weeks 3, 5 and 7, with the overall champion winning a Fluoro-Free wax gift basket from Swix Canada! Throughout the Challenge there will be leaderboards to track your ranking by age, gender and total overall accumulation. Participants can upload from their preferred GPS tracking device directly to the Zone4 site where their daily, weekly or monthly totals will accumulate. It is possible to manually enter distances skied “on your honour” but to be eligible for prizes the distances must be verified by a GPS device.
We need one or two volunteers that would be willing to help maintain the outhouses on the trail system. Once or twice a month, if you could ski by and check that they are accessible and if snow is accumulating, shovel out a passage to the door; replenish the TP and hand sanitizer if required. If more than one person is willing to share the load, it could mean only having to check one that is on your most favorite route.
If you can help, please contact Karen at the chalet office, call 236-586-5711 or email manager@skilarchhills.ca.
